9 local artists. 1 square. 3 seconds of total freedom. This is the trailer for When East Meets West 2024, the renowned co-production forum held every year in Trieste (Italy), organized by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund.
For this year’s edition, 9 artists based in Friuli Venezia Giulia - working across illustration, animation and motion design - were invited to bring their visual world to life in a bold, collective experiment.
Each artist was given 3 seconds of complete creative freedom to express their vision. The only rule? A square had to remain in the center of the frame throughout the sequence. That square became the visual thread tying all the animations together, a continuous presence, a symbol of unity within diversity. More than just a constraint, it is also a direct reference to the WEMW logo, whose geometry inspired the entire visual concept.
Though rooted in Friuli Venezia Giulia, these artists work with national and international clients - reflecting the very spirit of When East Meets West: an event that, from the heart of this borderland region, builds bridges between Eastern and Western Europe, connecting filmmakers, producers, and industry professionals from across the continent.
